Adjudicators: Gwenan Gibbard & Iestyn Tyne

The competition is a partnership between the National Eisteddfod of Wales (Tŷ Gwerin), and the BBC and is an attempt to discover new Welsh folk music talent. The competition will be open to bands or solo artists performing folk music, and can be instrumental, vocal or a combination of both. Folk is defined as traditional Welsh songs and tunes or new songs in the folk style.

How do I apply for the Battle of the Folk Bands?

Step 1
to compete you must:

  • Register online through the Eisteddfod competition portal by 1 May 2025
  • Submit a video of the set up to 15 minutes to include at least two, and up to four songs

The judges will choose up to four artists/bands/groups to go on to the next round

Step 2
Those artists/bands/groups will have the opportunity to:

  • Record a live set of two songs at Clwb Ifor Bach or at a location in North Wales
  • The recorded songs will be broadcast on BBC Radio Cymru and on digital platforms leading up to the Eisteddfod

Step 3
at the Eisteddfod maes

  • A live performance of the songs at Tŷ Gwerin on the Tuesday of the Eisteddfod
  • The name of the winning artist/band will be announced following the performance
