The registration period for the Rhondda Cynon Taf National Eisteddfod’s Y Lle Celf competitions has opened, with prizes of up to £5,000 available to artists working within a wide range of artistic genres
Applications for the Eisteddfod visual arts competitions and Open Exhibition, are open to anyone born in Wales, whose parents were born in Wales, who speaks or writes Welsh or who has lived or worked in Wales for the three years before 31 August 2024.
The closing date for this year's competition is 1 April, and a team of specialist selectors have been appointed to consider and select the winning works, together with those that will be included in Y Lle Celf Open Exhibition in Parc Ynysangharad, Pontypridd from 3-10 August.
Y Lle Celf is one of the most popular areas on the Eisteddfod Maes every year, with thousands of visitors flocking to see works by new and established artists displayed in one exciting exhibition which is a celebration of the visual arts in Wales today.
The competitions in the visual arts section this year are:
- Gold Medal for Fine Art, with a replica of the Gold Medal and £5,000 as a prize;
- Gold Medal for Craft and Design, with a replica of the Gold Medal and £5,000 as a prize;
- New Artist Scholarship for an artist under the age of 30, worth £1,500;
- Norah Dunphy Gold Medal for Architecture;
- Plaque of Merit, for a renovation or new project in Wales;
- Architecture Scholarship, worth £1,500.
There’s also a chance for those selected for the Open Exhibition to be considered for a number of other prizes during the week, namely:
- Ysbryd y Frwydr Prize: The Ivor Davies Prize, for work conveying the spirit of the struggle for the language, culture and politics of Wales, with a prize of £600;
- The Tony Goble Award, for a work by an artist exhibiting for the first time, conveying the poetic spirit of this Celtic nation, with a prize of £500;
- The Josef Herman Award: People's Choice, for the most popular piece of work by public vote, with a prize of £500.
