An alternative country/folk/rock band made up of three brothers – Iwan, Aled and Dafydd Hughes – and a revolving line-up of accompanying musicians, Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog draws on influences from country, folk and rock, with most lyrics written and performed in Welsh. Formed in 2006, the band released their debut album Dawns Y Trychfilod in 2007. Their critically acclaimed second album Dyddiau Du, Dyddiau Gwyn (2010), produced by David Wrench, brought wider recognition and airplay. Their third album Draw Dros y Mynydd (2012), also produced by Wrench, gained national exposure on BBC Radio 2, Radio 3 and 6 Music, and was shortlisted for the Welsh Music Prize. Their fourth album IV (2016) continued to build momentum, earning national BBC airplay. In 2023, they released the double single Clawdd Eithin / Adenydd and a live album Yn Fyw! Galeri Caernarfon. March 2024 saw the release of their sixth album Mynd â’r Tŷ am Dro, which won Albwm Cymraeg y Flwyddyn at the 2024 Eisteddfod and was once again shortlisted for the Welsh Music Prize.
