Following an open call during the autumn term of 2024, a panel of adjudicators selected three musicians to work with the mentor composer, Pwyll ap Siôn, throughout the first half of 2025 to compose for an instrumental ensemble. The three compositions will be performed for the first time on the Pavilion stage during this ceremony, and the medal will be awarded to the winning composer.
To acknowledge the centenary of the birth of Islwyn Ffowc Elis, one of Wrexham’s finest sons, this year's Composer’s Medal theme is 'Wales of the Future' and the task assigned to the composers was to respond through music to his epic science fiction novel, ‘Wythnos yng Nghymru Fydd’
The three musicians who reached the shortlist, Jon Guy, Sarah Lianne Lewis, and Owain Gruffudd Roberts, have collaborated and developed their compositions with three exceptionally versatile string players under the care of Sinfonia Cymru, Simmy Singh (violin), David Shaw (violin/viola), and Garwyn Linnell (cello) in a series of workshops, under Pwyll’s mentorship.
