Maes D
'Oh Lord, here is iniquity' – the last words of Dic Penderyn, the first martyr of the working class who was hanged in 1831 for the failure of the Merthyr Rising, following campaigns to establish a trade union and workers' rights in Wales. Rights and fairness for workers have a long and deep tradition in Wales and Welsh has been central to that history as a living language, the language of work, the language of discussions and negotiation and the language of the picket line.
