  1. Who can apply?
    The exhibition is open to anyone:
    • born in Wales,
    • or with a parent born in Wales,
    • or can speak or write in Welsh
    • or has lived or worked in Wals for the three years up to 31 August 2024.
  2. Entry form and fee
    Register to compete online before 1 April 2024 www.eisteddfod.cymru. Entrants can upload up to six 300 dpi Jpeg images or link to video / performance work by following the instructions when registering to enter online. Please make sure that the images are clear, and work has to be available from 1 April - 16 August 2024. Eligible works must have been completed since 31 August 2022.
  3. Artist’s Statement
    An artist’s statement of 200-300 words on the work entered must be uploaded. We are looking for a description of the work, and not your CV / biography.
  4. Welsh Language Rule
    Any original words incorporated in the artwork (including sound and video) must be in Welsh. However, words in other languages may be included if they form part of an object depicted or incorporated, or if they are quotations, provided they do not form a substantial part of the whole composition.
  5. Copyrightt
    Copyright remains with the artist, with the Eisteddfod allowed to reproduce any work in print or online, to publish works from the exhibition and / or to promote the Eisteddfod.
  6. Sales
    The price of any works for sale should be noted when registering. 40% commission (including VAT) is charged for any works sold during the Eisteddfod.
  7. Authenticity
    All work submitted must be the bona fide work of the entrant and must not have been exhibited in any previous National Eisteddfod.
  8. Selection
    The decision of the selectors will be final.
  9. Elegibility
    Entrants must be within any relevant competition age range on 31 August 2024.
  10. Scholarships
    The successful candidate will be expected to prove to the Eisteddfod that the money will be used to promote their career. See clause 21 of the Eisteddfod General Terms and Conditions. Scholarships can only be won once. The financial prize for each scholarship is offered to prmote the artist’s career, and winners are expected to prove this to the Eisteddfod. Winners must contact the Eisteddfod office before the end of September to claim their scholarship.
  11. Exhibition
    The selected works will be displayed in Y Lle Celf for the duration of the Eisteddfod. Where the work necessitates, it may happen other than in the building itself.

Architecture in Wales

At the National Eisteddfod of Wales, Rhondda Cynon Taf one prestigious award will be given with the support of the Design Commission for Wales and the Royal Society of Architects in Wales. The aim of this award is to raise the profile of architecture in Wales by recognising projects selected for their high design quality and the way they convey the richness of architecture and its value in Welsh culture.

THE NORAH DUNPHY GOLD AWARD FOR ARCHITECTURE

Award: T Alwyn Lloyd Memorial Medal (replica)

Awarded in conjunction with the Royal Society of Architects in Wales and Design Commission for Wales.

In honour of Norah Dunphy, the first woman in Britain to obtain the Bachelor degree of Architecture in 1926. Originally from Llandudno and attended John Bright School. She studied at the University of Liverpool under Professor Charles Reilly, and also obtained a first-class certificate in civic design under Professor Patrick Abercrombie.

The medal commemorates Thomas Alwyn Lloyd (1881 – 1960) who was a Welsh architect and town planner. He was one of the founders of the Town Planning Institute in 1914 and its President in 1933. He was also a founding member of the Council for the Protection of Rural Wales in 1928.

PLAQUE OF MERIT

A plaque of merit is presented to a refurbishment, renovation or new project in Wales which is of high design quality and standard, with a maximum contract value of £750,000.

Applications will be considered for these prestigious awards only if evidence of the following is provided:

Projects will demonstrate excellence on design and architectural quality demonstrating a successful approach to

  • The principles and practice of placemaking as recognised in the Wales Placemaking Charter and Guidance
  • A design demonstrates a commitment to environmental sustainability in its design approach to its location and setting; building performance and decarbonisation.
  • A design approach which demonstrates a contribution to Wales as a better place, supporting cohesive communities; cultural richness and sustainability.

Applications are invited from architects or groups of architects to submit projects with a date of practical completion between 1 January 2022 and 1 March 2024.

In addition, the applications shortlisted will be included in the exhibition at the Y Lle Celf, National Eisteddfod of Wales, Rhondda Cynon Taf and the winner(s) announced during the awards ceremony.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES:

To apply your project(s) to the National Eisteddfod Cymru, the project must:

  • be built in Wales
  • have been practically completed between 1 January 2022 and 1 March 2024
  • have been led by project architect
  • have the client's consent to submit the project.

  • Contract type (for UK projects), date of planning approval and date of occupation of the project

If you worked in conjunction with another practice or architect, you must all agree on the access and how the project should be credited.

500 words describing the project, stating:

  • The client's brief
  • Location, site or other constraints (we prefer not to identify planning negatively)
  • design approach to the brief, materials and construction method
  • Summary of the schedule
  • Programme and budget constraints
  • A short statement on how the project contributes to its community and meets inclusive design principles, where applicable

This project description will be used in jury meetings and to influence editorial coverage, so make sure it covers your application in full.

Key consultants

Remember to include:

  • a list of all key consultants to be credited, e.g. structural engineer, services engineer, landscape architect(s) etc., with contact details

These consultants will be credited on all our online content, press releases and award certificates, so please ensure they are listed correctly.

Images
Applicants are required to submit the following:

  • 8 JPEG images, with a minimum width and/or height of 1000 px
  • Include a mix of exterior and interior photos of the project
  • Convey the way the project relates to its context, as these images are used for judging purposes
  • Include wide shots and close-ups, and show the project in use, with people, if possible
  • Not include company logos or text on any images
  • Include the photographer copyright credit for each image
  • Location plan (showing the project in context, e.g. 1:1250)

Architecure Scholarship

This scholarship was established to promote architecture and design in Wales. The scholarship is awarded to the most promising candidate to enable them to broaden their awareness of creative architecture and strive for design excellence. This is a scholarship to be held for one year only and the successful applicant will receive £1,500 to further their study and subsequent career.

The winner of the scholarship is expected to present a visual essay to be displayed at the following Eisteddfod. Applications are welcome from the fields of architecture, landscape or urban design. The word architecture is interpreted in the broadest sense. ï

Awarded jointly with the Royal Society of Architects in Wales and Design Commission for Wales.

To submit your work to the Welsh National Eisteddfod you must follow the following:

The scholarship will be open to people in education, studying architecture during and up to one year following completion of a MA/MSc degree. Candidates will have strong connections to Wales, be born in Wales or of Welsh descent, or may have lived and worked in Wales for the three years prior. The ability to communicate via written or spoken Welsh and/or reflect the richness of Welsh language is desirable as is a tangible empathy with the importance of the Welsh language in Wales.
