Acting a Play or a Theatrical Invention
- Step 1: Register to compete
- You must register to compete online by 1 April via the Eisteddfod website
- Upload a copy of the script as it is intended to be performed or a detailed sketch of the presentation if devised work
- Stage 2: Judges to choose 3 companies to compete in the Eisteddfod
- The semi-finals must take place by the end of June, either through:
- A live performance of the Play or Invented Work in front of the adjudicator at a center(s) which is central to the companies
- OR, a recording of the Play or an Invented Work can be submitted if it is not possible for the adjudicator to visit the company before the end of June (contact cystadlu@eisteddfod.cymru for further guidelines and instructions).
- Stage 3: Performing at the Eisteddfod
- A final round is held in a dedicated center on a specific day during the week of the Eisteddfod
- Any company that has been selected for the final test, but withdraws without sufficient reason must notify the Eisteddfod office at least one month before the day of the competition
- The adjudicator will present an oral adjudication at the end of the final.
- Rules and conditions
- If performing a play, the play must either be a complete one-act play or an excerpt from a long play or an invented work.
- No introduction/context is permitted, either by speech or printed summary.
- The performance should not be less than 20 minutes long or longer than 50 minutes. 'Performance time' includes any time required to change a scene during a performance.
- 10 minutes are allowed to set up the stage and 5 minutes to clear the stage.
- The companies must secure the right to perform, and a copy of the license must be uploaded with the application form.
- A financial contribution of up to £250 will be made towards the production and travel costs of the companies invited during the week of the Eisteddfod. It will be necessary to make an application with an invoice of the costs to the attention of cystadlu@eisteddfod.cymru by 1 September following the Eisteddfod.
Stage competitions
- The performance must begin and end with an empty stage. The performance is timed from the moment the stage begins with the first action until the stage is cleared after the presentation.
- Simple props and furniture, dress and music are allowed. The competitors themselves should set up and clear the stage unless there are exceptional cases that would allow the official stage managers to do this.
- Competitors' attention is drawn to the Eisteddfod Language Rule. There must be a definite artistic justification for using a language other than Welsh in selections and self-selection competitions
- It is not permitted to include any libelous material or any use of indecent language, which could cause offense to others, in any selections or competitions of self-selection or impromptu presentation.
