Today, the National Eisteddfod announced that Nia Wyn Jones from Aberdeen, Scotland is this year’s Wales and the World President.
Nia has many happy memories of the Eisteddfod in Llanrwst back in 1989. Her father, comedian Gari Williams, was born in the town and she remembers walking hand in hand with him from the caravan site to the Maes during his final Eisteddfod.
Originally from Colwyn Bay, Nia graduated at Bangor’s Normal College before embarking on a career working in television with Caernarfon-based Antena on Uned 5. She then moved to Dorking, Surrey, where she worked in event management.
After returning to north Wales, marrying and giving birth to her son, Aaron Emyr, the family began travelling as her husband worked in the oil industry.
Their first home was in Okpo, South Korea, and then, two years later, the family moved to Singapore. Nia was President of the Singapore St David’s Welsh Society for almost three years and enjoyed fantastic experiences representing Wales in Asia.
The family returned to the UK and to Scotland, and are now settled in Aberdeen. Nia is happy to be based closer to family and friends after travelling the world.
She will be honoured in a ceremony at the beginning of the Eisteddfod’s Cymanfa Ganu, held in the Pavilion on Sunday evening, 4 August.
The Conwy County National Eisteddfod is held on the outskirts of Llanrwst from 3-10 August. For more information go to www.eisteddfod.wales.
