With little less than a month to go before the closing date for stage competitions, the National Eisteddfod has launched a new service which will help competitors as they prepare for this year’s festival.
The piano accompaniment for all test pieces in the Anglesey Eisteddfod List of Competitions are now available to download or use online. The files can be found on the registration and information page for each of the competitions.
Talented and experienced musician and accompanist, Annette Bryn Parri is responsible for the work, and she believes that it’ll be a very useful resource for this year’s competitors. She says, “I regularly receive telephone calls and emails from competitors looking for a chance to rehearse with an accompanist. Some teachers may not feel comfortable attempting pieces which are technically challenging, or competitors may not know anyone who can help with accompaniment when rehearsing.
“So I decided to offer help and support to this year’s competitors by recording the accompaniment for all the vocal test pieces this year to be included on the Eisteddfod website. There were 130 pieces in total, but the work is now completed and live online, ready to be downloaded.
“The aim of these pieces is to assist the competitors during rehearsals. They’ll help individuals to find the best songs for their voice type, and I’ve also chosen a slower pace for some of the songs, as this will help during practice sessions. The simple aim is to offer help and a new service to Eisteddfod competitors, in the hope that it’ll encourage more singers to take part in vocal competitions.
“This year’s project was an experiment, and I hope we’ll receive feedback from competitors. The pieces will also be kept on the Eisteddfod website to develop a media library for the future.”
Eisteddfod Organiser, Elen Elis, added, “We are grateful to Annette for contacting us with the idea and for all her work preparing the pieces. This will be a valuable resource for our competitors and for singers in the future.
“Looking for an accompanist for rehearsals can be a time consuming and expensive exercise. This resource enables singers to rehearse at any time. The files can be downloaded to a computer or smartphone, and the system is accessible and very useful.
“With the ‘Get Creative’ weekend held this week, it’s great to be able to announce that these accompaniments are live online, giving more singers than ever the opportunity to have a go at the test pieces before they sign up to compete.
“With online registration for stage competitions available for the second year, it’s great to be able to add to the service this year. I hope we receive constructive feedback and that we’ll be able to offer this service again in the future.”
Annette is willing to prepare a recording of the accompaniment for any song for competitors, and anyone interested should contact her directly, firstname.lastname@example.org.
