With little over a week to go before A Oes Heddwch? – the National Eisteddfod’s opening concert on Anglesey – Aled and Dafydd Hughes, leading the project’s creative team have released one of the songs as a taster of what’s to come on the night.
This will be done on Lisa Gwilym’s Radio Cymru show this evening.
Mwd a Gwaed has been chosen as Track of the Week by BBC Radio Cymru next week, during the period leading up to the performance. The song is performed by Osian Huw Williams, and Aled said, “We decided to release Mwd a Gwaed for a number of reasons – the song reflects Dafydd and my musical background – as well as being a stand-alone song within the show.
“Osian Huw Williams is one of the stars of A Oes Heddwch? and it’s great that we’re able to release this as a single by him.
“Having it as the Track of the Week on Radio Cymru is excellent news and is the perfect way to increase the excitement ahead of the show!”
Guto Dafydd who wrote the words for the song, said, “The aim of A Oes Heddwch? is to see the story of the war through the eyes of real people in our communities.
“It’s difficult for us to imagine the horrific conditions in the trenches or the feelings of the soldiers awaiting their fate, but this song tries to describe the hell facing these young lads.”

The song forms part of a larger work which includes the Eisteddfod Choir and soloists, Osian Huw Williams, Casi Wyn, Emyr Gibson, Lleuwen Steffan and Gwen Elin, accompanied by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, with orchestral arrangements by John Quirk.
Paul Mealor and Grahame Davies have collaborated on a specially-commissioned Requiem as part of the performance. The Artistic Director is Siwan Llynor and the project co-ordinator is Mari Lloyd Pritchard.
The project is a partnership between the National Eisteddfod of Wales, Snowdonia National Park Authority, Arts Council of Wales, Gwynedd County Council, Anglesey County Council and BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
Limited tickets are still available for the performance, held in the Eisteddfod Pavilion, Bodedern at 20:00 on Friday 4 August. These can be ordered through the Eisteddfod website, www.eisteddfod.wales or by ringing the Ticketline on 0845 4090 800.
