Music (Vocal)

Vocal competitions, the entry form and the special conditions.

35. W. Towyn Roberts Scholarship in memory of his wife, Violet Jones, Nantclwyd and the William Park-Jones Scholarship.

These scholarships were set up to promote vocal music for soloists in Wales.

The scholarships are awarded to the most promising competitor in a special competition to enable him / her to follow a vocal training course at a recognised music school or college.

The scholarships are open to any person born in Wales or one of whose parents were born in Wales, or any person who has lived or worked in Wales for the three years prior to the date of the Eisteddfod, or any person who can speak or write Welsh.

These are scholarships to be held for a year, and their worth will be no lower than £5,000.  The second placed competitor will receive £3,000, the third, £1,000 and the fourth placed competitor will receive £500.  The adjudication panel reserve the right to with-hold the scholarships or to share them between more than one winner should the need arise.

The competitors will be expected to prepare a programme of no more than 15 minutes.  The programme must include one song by a Welsh composer from the twentieth century or the current century, and every song must be sung in Welsh.

The Eisteddfod Office will provide Welsh translations of any songs.  Contact the office before 1 May 2017, enclosing a copy of the original words and music to apply for a translation.

Competitors will not be able to change their original choice of songs after 1 May 2017.

The Eisteddfod will provide an accompanist for this competition but competitors have the right, if they wish, to bring their own accompanists.

The adjudication panel may withold the scholorships or divide them between more than one winner if needed.  See General Rules and Conditions, no. 21.
