Details of the folk songs competitions, the terms and conditions and the entry form.

1. Folk Song Choir with over 20 members
(a) Unison: ‘Tribannau Morgannwg’, Ffylantin-tŵ [Sain]
(b) Arrangement for 3 or more voices of a contrasting traditional folk song, not including any of those set in this section this year.
This competition will be held on Friday or Friday evening 10 August 2018

Prizes:
1. Parti’r Ffynnon Trophy to be held for a year and £500 Côr Merched Canna)

2. Folk Song Party with up to 20 members

(a) Unison: ‘Jail Caerdydd’, (3 verses) [Eisteddfod Office]

(b) Arrangement for 2, 3 or 4 voices of a contrasting traditional folk song, not including any of those set in this section this year.

This competition will be held on Friday or Friday evening 11 August 2017

Prizes:

1. Rhianedd Môn Trophy to be held for a year and £300 (Eglwys Gymraeg yr Annibynnwyr, Loveday Street, Birmingham)
2. £200

3. Folk Song Party for those aged under 25 with up to 20 members

(a) Unison: ‘Y Deryn Pur’, Ancient National Airs of Gwent and Morganwg [CAGC]

(b) Arrangement for 2, 3 or 4 voices of a contrasting traditional folk song, not including any of those set in this section this year.

Prizes:

1. £150

4. Lady Herbert Lewis Memorial Competition for those aged 21 and over

Any two contrasting traditional folk songs, other than those set in this year's list of competitions, to be sung in the traditional way, unaccompanied

1. Lady Herbert Lewis Cup to be held for a year, Medal (Er cof am Peter Elias Jones gan ei deulu) and £150 (Elen Rhys, Caerdydd)

5. Folk Song Solo for those aged 16 and under 21

The winner will be given the opportunity to attend the Welsh Folk Song Society conference in Aberystwyth on 22-23 September 2018, paid for by the Society, with a performing slot in the evening.

7. Folk Song Solo under 12

8. Presentation in words, dance and song: Môr (Sea)

At least three elements from the five noted must be included - traditional folk songs, cerdd dant, dance, drama and recitation - to create an imaginative performance.

The presentation should be no longer than 10 minutes, including setting up and clearing the stage.  Movement, costumes and small scale props can be used.

An outline of the script should be sent by 1 July 2018 and a full copy by the Eisteddfod.

(The competition is also included in the Cerdd Dant, Dance, Drama and Recitation sections)

9. Instrumental group or instrumental and vocal group

Arrangement of no more than 7 minutes of traditional Welsh airs or folk songs, with a combination of acoustic instruments or acoustic instruments and voice.  Emphasis will be put on the traditional nature of the performance

1. £300 (Ysgol y Gadeirlan, Llandaf) to be shared at the discretion of the adjudicators

Competitions in Y Tŷ Gwerin

10. Solo on any folk instrument

A programme of traditional Welsh folk airs of no more than 5 minutes, with an emphasis on the traditional Welsh technique, style and interpretation

11. Self-accompanied Folk Song Presentation

Own choice.  The competitor must present the piece, with background information – the words and melody, before performing.  This will all be adjudicated.  Registration on the day at least an hour before the competition.  Limited spaces.  Competition held in Y Tŷ Gwerin.  (No need to register by 1 May)
