Details of the choral competitions, entry form and terms and conditions.

 

28. Entertainment Programme

Choir of no fewer than 20 members.  Competitors are encouraged to perform a varied programme of their own choice of music from different genres for up to 12 minutes, to include three of the following elements: pop, musical, glee, religious, jazz, gospel, barbershop, rock etc.

Choirs will not be permitted to sing the same song in another category during the Eisteddfod.


This competition will be held on Sunday 5 August 2018

Prizes:

1. Y Cymro Cup to be held for a year and £750 (Ymddiriedolaeth James Pantyfedwen)
2. £500 (Eglwys Gymraeg yr Annibynnwyr, Loveday Street, Birmingham)
3. £300 (Avril Jones, Parc y Rhath, Caerdydd)

The Ann Dwynant Medal will be presented to the conductor of the winning choir, to be held for a year

29. Mixed Choir with no fewer than 20 members

Own choice, up to 12 minutes including an unaccompanied piece and a piece by a Welsh composer.  (The two elements can be combined to include an unaccompanied piece by a Welsh composer).

Choirs will not be permitted to sing the same song in another category during the Eisteddfod.

This competition is held on Friday 10 August 2018.

Prizes:

1. Tredegar Workers’ Institute Cup to be held for a year and £750 (Côrdydd)
2. £500 (Côr Godre’r Garth)
3. £300 (£200 Cantorion Creigiau; £100 Cronfa Cantorion Bro Nedd)

The Morfydd Vaughan Evans Memorial Medal will be presented to the conductor of the winning choir.

30. Male Voice Choir with no fewer than 20 members

Own choice, up to 12 minutes including an unaccompanied piece and a piece by a Welsh composer.  (The two elements can be combined to include an unaccompanied piece by a Welsh composer).

Choirs will not be permitted to sing the same song in another category during the Eisteddfod,

This competition will be held on Saturday 11 August 2018.

Prizes:

1. Welsh Association of Male Choirs Cup to be held for a year and £750 (Ymddiriedolaeth James Pantyfedwen)

2. £500 (Rob a Blod Lewis)
3. £300 (Gwyneth er cof am ei gŵr, Stan Jones, Llysfaen, Caerdydd)

The Ivor E Sims Memorial Medal will be presented to the conductor of the winning choir.

31. Womens’ Choir with no fewer than 20 members

Own choice, up to 12 minutes including an unaccompanied piece and a piece by a Welsh composer.  (The two elements can be combined to include an unaccompanied piece by a Welsh composer).

Choirs will not be permitted to sing the same song in another category during the Eisteddfod.

This competition will be held on Thursday 9 August 2018.

Prizes:

1. Charles Dawe Cup to be held for a year and £750 (Ymddiriedolaeth James Pantyfedwen)
2. £500
3. £300 (Merched y Wawr Y Bont-faen)

The Merched Hafren – Jayne Davies Medal will be presented to the conductor of the winning choir.

32. Choir for those aged 60 and over with no fewer than 20 members

Own choice, up to 12 minutes including an unaccompanied piece and a piece by a Welsh composer.  (The two elements can be combined to include an unaccompanied piece by a Welsh composer).

Choirs will not be permitted to sing the same song in another category during the Eisteddfod,

This competition will be held on Tuesday 7 August 2018.

Prizes:

1. OR Owen (Owen Gele) Cup to be held for a year and £750 (Ymddiriedolaeth James Pantyfedwen)
2. £500
3. £300

The Hilda Morgan Memorial Medal to be held for a year will be presented to the conductor of the winning choir.

33. Youth Choir for those under 25 with no fewer than 20 members

Own choice, up to 12 minutes including an unaccompanied piece and a piece by a Welsh composer.  (The two elements can be combined to include an unaccompanied piece by a Welsh composer).

Choirs will not be permitted to sing the same song in another category during the Eisteddfod.

This competition will be held on Wednesday / Wednesday evening 8 August 2018.

Prizes:

1. Daily Post Cup to be held for a year and £750 (Er cof am Doreen Batten a Joan Hooper, y chwiorydd Williams gynt o Arosfa, Llanwrtyd)
2. £500 (Côr Hen Nodiant)
3. £300 (Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf)

The Twm Dwynant Memorial Medal to be held for a year will be presented to the conductor of the winning choir.

34. Eisteddfodau Cymru Choral Competition

Any combination of voices with no fewer than 20 members, to present two contrasting pieces to take no more than 8 minutes, and to include a piece by a Welsh composer.

Choirs will not be permitted to sing the same song in another category during the Eisteddfod.

This competition will be held on Saturday 4 August 2018

Entry to this competition is permitted after competing in two local eisteddfodau between May 2016 and May 2018.

The local eisteddfodau must be mentioned when registering for this competition.

1. Miss Menai Williams and Mrs Nesta Davies Cup to be held for a year and £500

2. £300

3. £200

(£1,000 Gwobr Goffa Catherine Lloyd Morgan, gynt o Langors Fach, Ffair Rhos)
The Gwilym E Humphreys [National Eisteddfod Fellow] Memorial Medal will be presented to the conductor of the winning choir.

*35. Best Welsh Song

The Welsh Fusilliers’ Cup to be held for a year and £250, will be awarded to a choir in the choral section for the best performance of a piece by a Welsh composer.

36. Festival Choral Conductor in memory of Sioned James to the best choral conductor who has made an impact in the adjudicators’ opinion.

Trophy to be held for a year (Côrdydd and Sioned’s family)

37. Festival Choir

The adjudication panel will choose one of the winning choirs to receive a prize of £1,000, donated by Principality Building Society, the Welsh Guards Cup to be held for a year, and a workshop with an international conductor to be held at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff. 

The conductor of the winning choir will receive a Baton, donated by Gillian Evans, in memory of her godfather, Noel Davies.

38. Vocal Ensemble 10-26 years old (3-6 in number)

Own choice with or without accompaniment.  Welsh words.

No more than 4 minutes to perform.  Copies must be made available for adjudicators.

Winning in two local eisteddfodau between the 2017 National Eisteddfod and the end of July 2018 allows entry in this competition at the 2018 Cardiff National Eisteddfod. 

Note: Winners at the Urdd local and regional eisteddfodau and the Young Farmers’ Eisteddfod are accepted as ‘local eisteddfod winners’ (More details on the Cymdeithas Eisteddfodau Cymru website)

Rules / Terms

1. Parts should not be doubled, i.e. two sopranos or two tenors are not allowed to sing the same part throughout the performance.

2. An occasional bar, line or one verse may be sung in unison, but most of the piece should be sung in harmony, remembering that each one of the individuals should have prominence in their turn.

Eisteddfodau Cymru Scholarship
The Eisteddfodau Cymru Scholarship enables the winner to receive further training in performing on an eisteddfod stage. 

The scholarship cannot be won more than once.  If the Eisteddfodau Cymru competition includes more than one competitor, the scholarship will be shared between them.
