Committee member creates the Learners' Prose Trophy

31 January 2017

Did you know that the National Eisteddfod offers a number of competitions specifically for Welsh learners?

There are stage and written competitions to attract learners of all levels with generous prizes to be won.  So whatever takes your fancy, there’ll definitely be a competition to suit you.

One of the main competitions in the Learners Category is the Prose Trophy, which this year, is given for a piece of prose, up to 500 words on the subject of ‘Tide’.  The judge is Angharad Price, and there is a prize of £75 donated by  Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi, along with Vernon and Valmai Jones, Llanfairpwll donating the Trophy.

Gerry Sanger, a member of the Welsh Learners Committee, is responsible for this year’s trophy, which is a model of a bird well known to the people of Anglesey, the puffin.  The base, in the shape of Anglesey, has been carved out of walnut, and the puffin itself and the rock on which it stands is made from Jelutong, a wood from Malaysia.

Chair of the Anglesey Welsh Learners Committee, Elwyn Hughes, said, “We are all familiar with the puffin here on Anglesey, and this trophy captures its character perfectly.  We are very grateful to Gerry for creating it and very much hope someone will win it.  The fact that one of Anglesey’s Welsh learners has created it makes it all the more special.

“The committee is still busy organising the activities for Maes D (The Learners Tent).  It’s set to be a great timetable, full of fun! – Something for everyone! So remember to call by during the week.

“Also don’t forget about the important closing date – 1 April for written competitions and 1 May for competing on the stage.  So start preparing!”

Information regarding all the competitions for learners is available in the booklet, Beth amdani? Give it a go!, available from the local Welsh for Adults Centre, Menter Iaith Môn and the island’s libraries.  A pdf copy is available on Maes D’s page on the Eisteddfod website
