Commemorating the Great War

This year, the Eisteddfod marks the centenary of Hedd Wyn and the Great War.

A century ago, Hedd Wyn won the Eisteddfod Chair at Birkenhead.  But the young soldier-poet had been killed in action in one of the bloodiest battles of the War before claiming his Chair on the Pavilion stage.  The ceremony was held at the Eisteddfod, and the Black Chair and Hedd Wyn became an iconic part of our history.

We will also remember the generation of young men who left Wales never to return, and the families who were left behind here in Wales during the War.

Sessions have been organised across the Maes, looking at various aspects of Hedd Wyn's life and the War itself.

Many of these sessions have been organised by the Eisteddfod, and others by our partners and other organisations represented on the Maes.
